Cadburys eyebrow remake was using the time lapse technique where you set up before and choose number of seconds and pictures will be taken every so many seconds minutes or hours to create what looks like a constant flow of surreal movement. Time lapse is usually used in documentaries and film to show a passing off time. My animation is not to the quality that this below has. To do it again i would make sure i set the time lapse up before and make sure it works before rushing into it to make sure it looks like the quality off the piece below to make it look more smooth and flowing than rough and stuttering.

The time lapse seen here is at a very high standard

Zombies from behind was using object based animation as the name suggests you get objects as your characters and or set and animate them. Animating the objects was hard to make the movement look real and we didn't succeed in making realistic movement it looked floaty when zombies usually are heavy on there feet. I think doing object animation again would be good be using more realistic and appropriate objects especially for the characters.

Ducktanic was made using claymation and the focus was making the movement of the characters fluid by following a track on the paper to aid us. This is animation was not very good as the set was non existent due to using the guidelines and the characters were very poorly made and didn't look great. If i could do it again i would focus more on character development and making the movement very fluent and not rush it.

My Animations

Bouncy ball animation was used by using cut out. Cut out was used on the original South Park. Using cut out was one off my favorite types because it could be manipulated easily as well as creating unrealistic movement and sets. The problem with cut out is that you can be very limited in terms off character, sets and story lines because although can be manipulated you cant build totally what you what like you can with claymation.

Me and Animation

As a child i used to always watch animation starting with cartoons like Scooby Doo and Tales from the crypt keeper which in many ways shaped my love for films and TV as well as forming my personality by watching these at a young age. Tales from the crypt keeper started my love for all things horror.

Then i started to watch animated films like Nightmare before christmas which essential added my surreal side of life like enjoying weird and surreal environments, stories and characters. Toy story was the next big animation i can remember and the first real CGI film i loved. I got the merchandise to Toy story to this day as woody is one of my favorite characters in film as well as going as far as having a tattoo based on the film. Now watching animated films is a passionate because i like to escape in surreal environments and my latest favorite was UP because it was such a strong and emotionally story for a animation which was followed in the same way by Toy story 3. I would say in many aspects animation has formed a big part of my personality. I enjoy all forms off animation such as white stripes music videos and adverts such as Lloyds TSB.

Frame rate

Frame rates is the rate that a image device produces images consecutively known as frames. The usually frame rate in animation is 24 frames per second and to give it a fluid movement they usually record each movement twice known as "2s" less fluid animation will use "3s" or "4s. The human eye does not see this as "frames" but a fluid seamless motion. The more frames used creates a much more seamless movement this is because there are more transitions from A to B.

Persistence of vision

"Persistence of vision" is where the retina holds a image a split second after the image was seen this links to animation because the eye creates an illusion of motion when we see images in closely timed sequence to one another. The eye cant see the fractional gaps in the motion thus making it seamless to the eye.

For example this horse is a series of still images but to the eye it is a seamless motion of movement. This is the principles for all animation and how the eye sees still images. Animation not done to a high standard this where the eye will see jerks in the movement not making it seamless like the one above.

Target Audience

Animation films are usually considered to be children's films and can be watched by the whole family. This is because animation has a visual appeal for kids with basic characters and a simple plot that children can follow along with and enjoy. Allot of these films do cater for adults and parents as well because sometimes the stories can have a serious meaning under all the visuals and humor. For example Disney UP had humor with simple character exteriors but the story was a upsetting story of a mans journey after losing his wife which children may not fully understand the plot. Animations try to please all audiences but target children and make a film the parents can enjoy to.

Characters in animation

Characters are hugely important in any form of entertainment and this is no different in animation. Some of the big screens favorite characters such as Jack Skellington and Woody. This shows that even tough the characters are unrealistic they can still be created with a sense of reality allowing audiences to relate to them and still feel the characters emotions even if they are not in full human form. This is the beauty of animation same with locations we all loved halloween town and Andys bedroom.

CGI and Claymation

Animation has constantly developed in terms of films and TV starting from using persistence of vision using spinning images or projectors. But in film claymation and CGI have been very big in films with titles such as Nightmare before christmas for CGI and then Toy story setting the bar for CGI animation. The development of these techniques have only been possible through the early inventions and pioneers.

Claymation is creating characters and movement from clay and taking still images to make 24 images a second to make movement look fluid and natural whilst still been unreal. This takes the principles back to early animation and the use of quickly projecting images to create movement which takes the same principles all the way back to inventions like the zoetrope. With claymation you have to take in the principles on the previous page depending on which style you are trying to create. Also you have to pay extra attention to consistent lighting and character placement and movement.

CGI is computer generated imagery and has been a new type of animation and film compared to most. CGI gives the animators greater boundaries and realism to work with. Also 3D is now possible in cinema and has been used in allot of CGI animation to give the audience a different viewing experience. CGI also creates a virtual world which can be so unrealistic which maybe not possible with other types of animation and any characters can be placed in this virtual world. Whilst having a realistic character for the audience to be able to relate to.

Principles of Animation

Disney list of principles of animation.

1. Squash and stretch- the animator needs to define character and settings to be able to create shape during action.

2. Timing- Spacing actions to define weight and size of the objects to and the personality of the character.

3. Anticipation- create anticipation through the preparation of action.

4. Staging- presenting the ideas clearly

5. Follow through and overlapping action- relationship between actions.

6. Straight ahead and pose to pose action- two contrasting approaches to the creation of movement

7. Slow in and out- spacing needs to be considered and timing off movement

8. Arcs- visual path of action for natural movement.

9. Exaggeration - eccentric movement and characters ideas.

10. Secondary action- consider action for secondary characters

11. Appeal - create idea audience enjoys watching.

Pixar

Pixar is a company who make animation films. They started in 1996 and were bought by Disney in 2006 who are a big media and animation giant. They have made huge films such as the Toy story trilogy and Wall-E.

Pixar along with Disney are the biggest makers off animation films and also use CGI with all of there films over the last decade. CGI stands for computer generated image. Pixar and Disney are able to create a animation that looks cartoony as well as giving a sense of realism to its characters and feel.  CGI allows you to create a realistic world filled with anything magical such as Cars or Kung fu panda.
CGI is done on computer and can also be tied in with real action. Films such as the Matrix is blending the boundaries between live action and action.

Eadweard muybridge

Muybridge was born in England in 1830 and invented the zoopraxiscope.

The zoopraxiscope was a early device used to create motion picture. The device was created in 1879 and was believed to be the first movie projector. This device was also believed to inspire later pioneers such as Edison.

The device works by different outlined drawings placed on a disc then colored when in place and spun on the disk to create a moving image.

Lumiere Brothers

Auguste Lumiere born 1862 and Louis Lumiere 1864 also known as the Lumiere brothers were born in France Besancon and moved to Lyon.

They were big pioneers of both film and animation creating the cinematograph which was patterned in 1895. They also developed on Emile Reynauds film perforation. They also held there own personal screening in 1895.

The cinematograph serves as a film projector as well as a camera.
